I figured I should get myself a sticky post, since I've been locked for a while now. This journal is mostly flocked. I will make the occasional public post when I feel like it, but for the most part, no. Trust me, you aren't missing much. I post about ... whatever I feel like. Fandom ramblings, RL ramblings, the occasional emo angst, memes, whatever strikes my fancy, really. I'm a bit of a fandom nomad at the moment. I used to be super monogamous in the Supernatural/CWRPS fandom, but now I drift around a bit. At the moment, I've got American Idol S7/Anthemic and Stargate Atlantis on the brain, but I've been known to dabble in quite a few other areas. I really like TV. I watch and possibly post about many more shows than I would consider myself in the fandom for. I'm also a huge music fan. I would describe my music tastes succinctly as a bunch of bands you've never heard of (but should've) and ... former American Idol contestants, but I like a bit of nearly everything. *shrug* I'm weird.

If you're looking for my fic, click on over to [livejournal.com profile] ifshehadwings. A few old things that I'm too lazy to move are here (unlocked), everything else and everything new is over there.

Comment if you think we should be friends. I'm edging into bitter old fan queen territory at this point in my LJ life, so if I've never seen you anywhere or talked to you before, I'll be reluctant to friend you. I don't have any hard and fast rules, though.

Addendum (10/3/10): It should be noted that I have started posting entries on various cultural issues whenever the mood strikes me. Reader beware! I am in grad school for Rhetoric and Composition right now. What that means for you is that I've read a good amount of many and various critical theorists. While these entries are not academic essays (far from it), my perspective is informed by these theories, particularly feminist and queer theory with just a dash of marxism for flavor. In general, I am quite conflict averse. However, I am open to debate. If you choose to comment to one of these entries (or any entry, really, but especially these) with a dissenting opinion, I feel entirely free to analyze your points and explain why I disagree. You did choose to comment on my journal, after all.

My journal is my space. It is flocked for the most part. This is the one online space where I feel entirely free to post my own views and opinions without apology. That doesn't mean I'm going to purposely be an asshole to anyone unprovoked, but it does mean that I won't apologize for my beliefs or experiences to make anyone else feel better. If you disagree with something I've said and you don't want to hear another point of view on that subject, feel free to pass the entry by.

*taps mic* Is this thing on?

Ahem. Well, this is my first LJ entry of 2014. Oops? Whatever, you guys know I live on tumblr now. And in case you didn't --> MY TUMBLR

But hey ... who's still hanging out on ye olde LJ? Anyone? Bueller?

WELL. If anybody is still here you've heard me talk about [livejournal.com profile] wincon before. I've been going to Wincon since 2007 and it is hands down the best part of my year every year. Because I stuck around long enough and they decided they might as well make use of me if they couldn't get rid of me, I'm now PR chair on the con committee. So sit yourself down while I do some relating to the public. i.e. you lovely people.

Wincon is a 100% volunteer-run con. All of us on the con comm pay for our own registration. All the money taken in goes straight into making an awesome con - hotel fees, swag bags, A/V equipment, etc etc ad nauseum. And up through 2014 we've been pretty self sustaining. Each year's registrations pretty much pay for the con with maybe a few dollars left over to replenish some supplies for the next go round. Or not. Depends on the year really.

But that is coming to an end. With about 100 people, the con is just too expensive to sustain itself. It's too expensive for registration, meaning attendance is dropping. And that's because it costs more per person to run a smaller con than a (slightly) larger one. So, good news! We're growing! To make registration cheaper for everyone and to be able to offer more awesome con fun all at the same time, Wincon needs to grow to about 250-300 people. That's not a huge leap, but it does mean we need a lot of new blood.

indiegogo-videothumb

To make sure that we have the interest and the funding for a larger con, we're running registration through Indiegogo this year. If we reach our funding goal, Wincon is on! Happy fun times for everyone! If we don't, well, Wincon will be but a fond memory and I will be a very sad internet kitty. I think Wincon deserves to live on, and I'm asking you all to help me out with making that dream a reality.

Even more info under the cut! )

Enabling custom comment pages on here until there's some fix for LJ's fuckwittery. I know they're not the best for reading, but I actually can't look at the new default comment pages without getting a headache. ?style=mine if you just can't stand my weird Stargate theme ;-)

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

This is a bit of an odd request, but I know I can count on you guys not to think I'm too weird, right?

Okay, so who remembers a few years ago (2008 to be precise) when there was a, probably ill-conceived, attempt to create a literary magazine style anthology for SPN fandom known as "No Stairway"?

Fandom ... really didn't take it well. There was one issue published and then no more was heard from No Stairway.

If you remember it, did you make a post commenting on it? Positive, negative, neutral, doesn't matter. And/or do you happen to have any links lurking in your bookmarks of other people who made public posts commenting on it. I've managed to turn up a few posts with some judicious googling, but not enough for my purposes.

What are my purposes, you ask? Well, I'm in the midst of writing my masters thesis right now, and the subject is, you guessed it, fandom. Basically, what I'm looking at is how we deal with things when there's conflict and trying to perhaps come up with why we, as a lumpy, not-at-all-unified community respond to certain things in certain ways. i.e. what do we value as a community of writers/creators/crazy fangirls that meant we (collective we) did not hop on board with the idea of an anthology?

Reassurances! I won't be using anyone's LJ names. I may quote selectively from the entries, but the only people who are likely to ever read this are my professors, who I suspect have better things to do than track down fangirls by googling random quotes.

Anyway, if you recall any such entries, I would be FOREVER in your debt if you shared them. Thank you! (For reference, any such entries would most likely have occurred between January and June 2008.)

Well. I was going to write some fic. But ... instead I wrote this? This ... was sort of vaguely intended to be something to show my mother. For those of you who don't know, my mother and I have been having some upsetting "debates" that made me realize that we basically live in entirely different worlds when it comes to gay rights. I ... will probably not be showing this to her, but I kind of like it in all its rambly, ranty glory. So ... here?

Thoughts on being queer (in America) )

ETA: Making this entry public because ... well, because I feel like it :-)
I'm sure most of you have heard by now, but I just needed to make a post. Judge Vaughn Walker overturned Proposition 8 as unconstitutional today. And that makes it a good day to be alive.

NY Magazine's report

Unsurprisingly, a lot of the early negative reaction focuses on voter's rights since Prop 8 did pass with a 4% majority. In response, I would like to offer the following excerpt from Judge Walkers 136 page opinion:

For the reasons stated in the sections that follow, the evidence presented at trial fatally undermines the premises underlying proponents' proffered rationales for Proposition 8. An initiative measure adopted by the voters deserves great respect. The considered views and opinions of even the most highly qualified scholars and experts seldom outweighs the determinations of the voters. When challenged, however, the voters' determinations must find at least some support in evidence. This is especially so when those determinations enact into law classifications of persons. Conjecture, speculations and fears are not enough. Still less will the moral disapprobation of a group or class of citizens suffice, no matter how large the majority that shares that view. The evidence demonstrated beyond serious reckoning that Proposition 8 finds support only in such disapproval. As such, Proposition 8 is beyond the constitutional reach of the voters or their representatives.

Find the full opinion here.

YOU GUYS. SOMEBODY HOLD ME. I THINK I HAVE A GLIMMER OF FAITH IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS AGAIN.

I'm a horrible procrastinator, but I'm trying to get things back in order on my journal from waaaaay back when I locked down in November. The issues that led me to lock down are no longer a problem, but I've found I'm more comfortable with locking many of my entries, especially those that deal with RL.

So, I'm going to cut all the people who I added solely for the purpose of reading fic during that time. It's nothing against anyone, but we really don't know each other or talk, and it makes me kind of uncomfortable to have a bunch of people who are essentially strangers reading my personal entries. Honestly, I assume that you're only here for the fic, and that's totally fine. The stories that are still housed here are public, so you'll be able to read them. If I ever get around to moving them over, I'll let you know.

All other fic, past, present, and future, lives at [livejournal.com profile] ifshehadwings. I may mention fic over here, but it's far from guaranteed, so please do watch the comm if you want to keep up with my writing. Thanks!

ETA: To the best of my knowledge, I'm not cutting anyone who has actually talked to me outside of leaving a comment on fic. If you think there's been a mistake, let me know!
I know you don't see me around SPN fandom much anymore. Okay, okay, at all really. (I'm not dead, I'm resting!) But something's come up that I think as many people as possible should be aware of.

So, you know Zazzle, right? (Like CafePress only better, but less successful). Well, eons ago (I'm fairly sure it was mid 2007) I created some products on there. Most of them I made just for myself, ordered them, and called it a day. But while I was making stuff, I did make one keychain that I decided to put up for public sale in their "marketplace." I didn't put it up to make money (I've made less than a dollar from it in three years), I just thought people might like it, so why not?

The key chain in question was simple black with white text. The text read "Metallicar!" And as we all know, the word metallicar is a fan-coined term. Therefore, I felt I had every right to use it with no fear of legal repercussions. And the fact that it remained public for three years seems to support that.

However, yesterday I got an email from Zazzle informing me that someone had made an intellectual property claim, and that the product was being taken down since it was in violation of their policies.

In which corporate America is skeevy )
So, if you're not aware that there has been a distressingly large amount of racefail going on in fandom at large lately, I'm going to have to ask what rock you've been living under. I'm not going to address the specific instances (many, many people have done so brilliantly), but I did want to talk a little bit about how recent events have gotten me thinking. Or, really, brought to the forefront some things I've been thinking about for some time.

Briefly, before I get into the main issue here, I did want to address a common kind of rhetoric I've been seeing regarding these instances of fail. It goes something like this: "But [author] was just exercising her divinely ordained to freedom of speech and creative expression! How could you be so cruel as to crush her spirit with your mean and nasty words of criticism?!"

Let me make something painfully clear here. Freedom of speech is not the same as freedom from criticism, and it only works if it runs both ways. You have every right in the world to post your privileged, ignorant, offensive thoughts or stories. Go right ahead. However, I, and anyone else you might have offended, have an equal right to express our opinion of what you've posted. Freedom has to apply to everyone or it's not freedom at all. And if you've managed to post something that has elicited that much negative response, you might consider that some hard self-examination is in order.

Now that I've got that out of the way, what I really want to talk about is my own privilege. Here's what you need to know about me. I am a white girl from a middle-class family masquerading as upper middle-class. I went to a private girls' school and attended church in several mainstream, protestant denominations for most of my life. I was taught to be color-blind, and that all people were equal regardless of the color of their skin, but I wasn't taught to understand that there are institutional and cultural systems of oppression and privilege. My schools, houses of worship, and places of business have been almost entirely populated by white people all my life, and it has only rarely occurred to me to question this. In short, I'm surprised I haven't fallen over with the weight of my knapsack of white privilege.

Why am I telling you this? I want to be better. I know that there are aspects of white privilege that are out of my control. I can't control the way someone may respond to me or form assumptions about me as opposed to a Person of Color. But there are many, many things that are within my control. The dirty secret about privilege is that it's comfortable. And it's understandable to want to stay comfortable rather than makes oneself purposefully uncomfortable. But when my comfort is based on the pain and oppression of my fellow human beings, complacency is absolutely unacceptable. So, I'm taking the first step by trying to be brutally honest with myself and with all of you about this.

Unfortunately, more often than not in my life up to this point I have taken the coward's way out when it comes to conversations about race. I have always felt that it was preferable to stay silent than to risk stepping in it by saying something stupid, ignorant, or unintentionally hurtful. But I'm coming to understand that silence is equivalent to complicity, and I don't want to be complicit in an oppressive system. So, I'm going to try to speak up when there is reason to speak. And, when I inevitably fail horribly and stick my foot in my mouth, I will try to listen to criticism without getting defensive, so that I can hopefully understand what I did wrong and why.
Okay, guys, this is an important update for those of you interested in reading my fic. I'm really sorry that I've mishandled this lockdown situation. I really, truly meant to deal with the logistics of changing things over within a couple of weeks. Instead it's been months and I've also been terrible about friending people back which was supposed to be my stopgap solution.

So here's the deal. I did create a fic community, and got part of the way through transferring things over.

1. All fic posted prior to my 2008 Big Bang (4/15/08 and earlier) can now be found HERE

2. All NEW FIC from here on out will also be posted HERE so please watch the community if you want to follow my fic.

3. All fic from To Wake a Captive Dreamer (June 2008) to this point is now unlocked on this journal. Have at it and enjoy!

4. I WILL NO LONGER BE FRIENDING PEOPLE ON THIS JOURNAL FOR FIC READING PURPOSES. All the old links for what's been unlocked on this journal will now work, and I've been very careful about tagging on the new community, so you should be able to find what you're looking for there with very little trouble.

5. Eventually, I will finish the job of transferring my old stories to the community, at which point I'll let you all know about any further developments.

Thanks for your attention! And sorry again for not being more prompt about dealing with this. Love you all, and thanks for reading!
So I did that drabble meme. You know, the one where you put your itunes on shuffle and write a ficlet to each song for the duration of the song? Except I totally cheated. Many times I repeated the song and continued writing, and also I shuffled through until I found songs I actually wanted to write to. I know, shocking! Really I just realized that I hadn't written anything in FOREVER, so I figured it would be a good jumping off point.
